WHAT MAKES A GOOD...

POSTER:
"Posters provide a logical and cost-effective way of communicating to a particular target market. When placed correctly, attractive posters can lure nearby people into a specific event and alert them of an upcoming product or service. Posters have the ability to stick in viewers' minds and can be a great tool for small- to medium-sized businesses to use to increase brand awareness. Posters are cheaper than common forms of advertising such as print, radio and television."

REMEMBER:

Poster design starts with a common canvas. Common poster sizes are 8.5 by 11 inch letter (or A4), 11 by 17 inches and 22 by 34 inches. Large format poster sizes are commonly 24 inches by 36 inches. Posters can be designed vertically or horizontally, but are most commonly designed with vertical orientation

PROFESSIONAL POSTER DESIGN TIPS

1. make IT EASY TO READ FROM A DISTANCE

The poster should have THREE DISTINCT LAYERS:

  1. Headline: Opt for a readable typeface that demands attention.

  2. Details: What? When? Where? These are essentials and must be answered in possibly half the size of the headline.

  3. The fine print: Make this small and keep out the way.

2. Amp up the contrast

The poster is created to GRAB SOMEONE'S ATTENTION

  1. For a monotone colour palette with pale gradients, go bold with colour and type options.

  2. Start with a white background as this helps when printing.

3. consider size and location

THIS IS IMPORTANT

  1. Where will my poster be located? Probably on streets. This means that size and aspect ratio is very important as you don't want the the poster to be too cluttered.

  2. The poster should possibly be bright if it is going to be hung on street walls however this is something I'll have to decide.

4. use one big visual

This links to the poster needing to be READ FROM A DISTANCE

  1. Selecting visuals is highly important as you have to layer everything else around this and ensure that type and images have enough contrast so that they are independently readable.

5. use plenty of space

Consider the following aspects which require extra space:

  1. Between individual letters as tight kerning can cause letters to blur at a distance.

  2. Between lines of text.

  3. Around interior margins of the canvas.

  4. Between elements of different types, such as images and text.

  5. Around the most important element in the design.

6. CREATE FOCUS WITH TYPOGRAPHY

Useful typography tips:

  1. Some of the best posters are made with type and colour, but no images or illustration. This is a concept I could bare in mind.

  2. Experiment with bold, wide, bigger typefaces than what you would normally use.

  3. Use a type that conveys the appropriate mood for the event.

7. have fun
