evaluation

I don't even know where to begin with my evaulation but I can admit what I produced could defnitely have made room for improvement however one thing that I can definitely say I accomplshed was challenging myself to step outside my comfort zone. During this, I done things I would always have shied away from. I've had to network, get famililar with industry standard equipment and learn how to use software I've never used much before this.

Firstly, in regards to my poster, one thing I may have tripped up on was creating so many posters. Although I drew out initial sketches, typical me got way too carried away playing with designs on Photoshop- which is just because I simply love creating new ideas. On the other hand, doing this has assisted in developing my skills in this area of the media so it's not all bad. Right at the begining of the project, researching existing posters was quite daunting as they were all designed so well and to be honest, I really didn't think mine would look good at all but after liasing with peers, teachers and Sam, this definitely helped to build my confidence and help me to realise that everything I was producing wasen't as awful as I personally saw it!

 

While designing posters and more so the promo video, I was constantly in contact with Sam. Unfortuantely, this proved quite dificult as times due to him living aborad, nonetheless, I still managed to abide by his brief and produced everything he wanted- and more. I had to tell Sam that everything would take slightly longer than his deadline, but I did produce the first ever poster design to ensure I still submitted something for him to take a look at. After all three items had been produced, the first thing I done was tell Sam and he was estatic and said he wanted to use the same poster design for upcoming events for their Ibiza Digital Sunset event which was fabulous and espcially because I will be able to slightly modify the design to fit Sam's future needs. The poster is quite versitle and works for a range events be it in England or Ibiza.

My favourite aspect of the final poster, along with the short promo and long promo video was that I established a colour scheme. During the process of designing the posters I did get really lost, and the same thing happened when creating the short promo video. Something was missing and I didn't feel like I had established a brand until I referred back to my feedback where I discovered that using a black and white theme or something more simple would assist in achieving this. Once I done this, I could see a clear resemblance in each of the pieces which makes me really proud, espcially because I used aspects such as the HA logo and cat eyes to keep them connected.

Of course my poster isn't perfect; aspects which if revisiting, would be modifed include the font size and kerning. In order to fit the DJ names onto the poater I had to sqeeze them in as ensuring Kevin Over was larger than the other names was a necessity as he was the spcial guest. This did throw me as I really wanted to stick with the cloud in the middle of the poster as my focal point. If I was to amend the poster I would balance it out better which would result in a more asthetically pleasing advertisement.

Considering I spent so much time on the poster, I didn't exactly leave myself much time to focus on Final Cut Pro. Fortunately, this has taught me to manage my time more effectiently because I definetly did run off schedule although once I got editing, I did get into it which is crazy because since beginig college I couldn't stand filming. 

​

Additionally, in regards to the initial filming- this was en experience and one I'm glad I pushed myself to go through with. Filming in a club was probably one of the most nerve-racking things I've done since studying Media. I was embarrassed, felt like I was annoying people and the LED was unbelievably bright which made everything worse. Luckily I got over this fear and just pushed myself and after speaking with the club goers and explaining at the door by entering the building they would be filmed, everyone was really understanding. Ensuring everyone knew they was going to be filmed was crucial as Jeff once told us that this must be done.

The shots I captured weren't the best and this is probably because I struggled to get the camera in the correct setting. Although I done research and played about with the camera I was to use before the event to get familiar, it was still a task. Luckily the LED really saved me and I loved the picture it gave as the light created such a strong focal point to give a nice depth of field- which I thought made the camera work look more professional and less home made.

One thing I can take from the filming experience is to get way more footage than you need- it's better to have more than to not have enough. This was a struggle when it came to editing on Final Cut as where I was so nervous at the beginning I did waste quite some time which was a shame as once I got going I was recording non- stop but it'a all experience and definitely a lesson taught.

When it came to editing the footage, I opted to use Final Cut in comarosion to Premier Pro for the simple reason that I had hardly used Premier Pro and this project was far to important to create something which doens't look all that. Plus, the effects and transitions on Final Cut are really cool, espcally my fabourite 'Bad TV' which I used multiple times. This was to connect the glitch style poster, to the short promo, to the long promo. Creating a brand was the goal. In addition, I am proud of what I produced with what material I had, and heavily referred to YouTube tutorials. These were a great source of education and taught me some professional things which I would never had known how to do for instance, the flikery effect when Kirst blows a kiss and the opening title.

In relation to the title, this does look pretty DIY and not overly professional. However, it took me about an hour to do and although slightly messy, this sort of portrays the rave scene- it's messy and nothing is perfect. I did really like the way this made Kevin (in the middle of the title) become the focus seeing as he was the special guest. Transitions were really important as without these, the video looked so plain and quite boring. Plus they added a level of professionalism and made the video look more real and less a 'student project'. A major aspect which tied the video together was the music. Sam suggested 'Distortion' and although the audio isn't super lively, it's more relaxed, catchy and some shots actually go to the beat for instance towards the end where the shot flashes to a periscope. The audio is still very new and where Sam had purchased it, was copy write free which was a must as the content was produced for promotional purposes.

One thing I hate about the promotional video looking back at it is during the middle of the sequence, I filmed the club panning the shot to the right, however, I should have cut this shorter as it looks really unprofessional and wasn't even on a drop. Also, to improve I would have taken more clear shots of the DJs and more close up side profiles. I managed to get one of Kevin but this was quite blurred. I still used it but as a short cutaway shot from the main footage.

In relation to the short promotional video, I didn't use any footage and stuck to an animation. When designing the poster, I discovered you could import the image into Final Cut and animate it! This was great as I was then able to produce a customised 3D font on Photoshop combining multiple RGB layers and then add the Bad TV effect to the to create an 80s inspired VHS tape. I really liked the outcome of this and thought that 30 seconds was a good length of time for this style of promotional video as a lot longer, would have lost interest of viewers and any shorter wouldn't have conveyed enough relevant information. To keep my work simple, I used the same 'Distortion' audio plus where this was already paid for, we had permission to use it so finding something else would have been time consuming.

In conclusion, I am happy with what I produced and although it took me quite a bit of time, feel that I did fulfill my client's needs. Where this is only the beginning of Hidden Assemble, this has not only been just a Final Major Project, but also great experience for future design work and I have learnt so much on the way.
